Who can apply?
Qualified seafarers and maritime cadets over the age of 18 who meet the requirements of available positions.
What do you need?
Before applying for an overseas merchant-shipping job, prepare the following common, high-priority documents:
Valid Passport — Ensure it has at least six months’ validity where required.
Seafarer’s Identity/Discharge Book — CDC, Seaman’s Book, or equivalent document.
STCW Basic Safety Training (BST) Certificates — At minimum, the four basic STCW safety-training modules. Additional STCW certificates or endorsements may be required depending on your rank or specialty.
Certificate of Competency (CoC) or Certificate of Proficiency (CoP) — Required for officers and certain specialist positions, where applicable.
Passport-Style Photographs — Keep recent photographs available in the required format and quantity.
Police Clearance/Criminal Record Check — Provide this where requested by the employer, manning agency, flag state, or immigration authority.
Vaccination and Health Records — Keep up-to-date vaccination records and any additional health documentation required for the destination or employer.
Proof of Sea Service — Keep accurate records of previous sea service, including sign-on/sign-off entries, sea-service testimonials, discharge book entries, or other accepted evidence.
Flag-State Endorsements and Certificate Equivalence — If your certificates were issued by another country, you may need flag-state endorsements, recognition documents, certificate equivalence, or other approvals.
Certified Translations — Documents that are not in the required language may need to be officially or certified translated.
